Margaret C. Brewer, Esq.

I am an experienced California Family Law attorney with a straightforward, personal approach to handling complex legal issues. The legal matters I handle regularly range from adoptions, to marital settlement agreements to divorce. My immediate goal always is to put clients at ease so I can help them focus on what’s important.

I decided later in life to enter the field of law, because I felt a desire to help families and serve the community. (My friendships with our retired colleague, Doug McFarland, and Law firm owner, Paula Teske, also inspired me!) Prior to earning my law degree, I spent two decades working in executive positions for Xerox Corporation. That work allowed me to develop numerous skills, many of which transferred well to my career as an attorney — skills such as Customer Satisfaction, Negotiating Agreements, and being a Team Player.

I am by nature logical and organized. I handle all matters with honesty and integrity: talents and traits that are a perfect fit for Family Law work. To handle sensitive and complex matters which impact families, a good legal advocate needs to possess:

  • a mind for detail with big-picture focus;
  • the ability to strategize various courses of action, then calculate the best outcome;
  • a sense of empathy and compassion for clients who need help; and
  • an ability to communicate in plain, direct language.

I am grateful to work alongside Attorneys Paula Teske and Patricia Rayos and our team. These thoughtful and compassionate people make coming to work a joy. Our attorneys are a tightly knit group — we’re like a family ourselves. Every day, we help people just like you with their legal needs. As our client, we want to help you get your life back on track as quickly as possible so you can get started with the future you envision.

I practice Family Law because I believe happiness is difficult to attain without a calm family life. A calm family life is the foundation upon which you build your future. If you’re looking for expert and sensitive legal representation in your time of need, please contact me to discuss your situation.

Professional Background

From 1981 to 2001, I worked for Xerox Corporation in many locations throughout southern California, holding diverse positions, including Financial/Staff Services Manager, where I managed an $8.1 Million budget. I also worked as a Customer Satisfaction Manager, Organization Transformation Manager, Field Service Manager and Customer Service Engineer.

In 2001, I began working for Paula Teske & Associates, focusing on Family Law litigation, Domestic Partnership registrations and dissolutions, Adoptions, Bankruptcies, Landlord/Tenant Disputes, Trademarks, Copyrights, Wills/Trusts and Probate. Among other activities, I have managed clients; analyzed problems; developed plans of action; prepared Court pleadings and motions; propounded and responded to Discovery; issued subpoenas; negotiated Stipulated Judgments; prepared for Trial; and appeared in Court.

In 2010, I took a 2-year sabbatical from Teske & Associates and worked as the Executive/ Legal Director of the HIV & AIDS Legal Services Alliance (HALSA) — a non-profit organization serving low-income Clients living with HIV/AlDs in Los Angeles. In that role, I managed Housing, Public Benefits and Immigration Attorneys, the Low Income Taxpayer Clinic and Enrolled Agent, support staff, interns and volunteer attorneys. The work additionally entailed overseeing Program Grants, Annual Fund-Raising, and Grant Proposal preparation in support of HALSA’s objectives.

Hobbies and Activities

I love to read, cook, travel, and play racquetball. I also play classical and jazz piano. Prior to moving to Los Angeles, I worked for years as a professional musician in the Boston area. Unfortunately, a broken wrist and a challenging rehab compelled me to find alternative work in Los Angeles, therefore, my transition to Xerox. I will, however, always find time for music in my life.
